Olympiad "Fascinating Biology"

On April 3, 2023, at the Institute of Natural Science and Geography of Abai KazNPU an inter-university intellectual Olympiad "Fascinating Biology" was held as part of the scientific decade of natural disciplines.

Students from three universities of Almaty took part: two teams from Abai KazNPU ("Young Biologists" and "Sirius"); two teams from KRMU ("Hippocrates" and "Abzal Jandar"); and one team from KazNWTTU ("Zhasstar").

The questions considered in the Olympiad are related to the field of genetics: Basic terms of genetics; Structure and functions of DNA; Chargaff`s rule; Central dogma of molecular biology; Mendeleev`s laws. Problem solving; Linked inheritance. Problem solving; Types of gene interaction; Multiple alleles; Variability and its types; Combinative variation; Mutational variation; Chromosomal diseases.

The students actively participated and demonstrated a high level of knowledge. Answers to questions on the topics showed that future biologists and doctors can be used in practice. Cheerleading students from the above mentioned universities also took part in the Olympiad and showed their support and activity.

Thus, Hippocrates team took the 1st place, Abzal Jandar and Young Biologists shared the 2nd place, Sirius and Zhas Star took the 3rd place.

The organizers were the faculty of the Biology Department: Professor Zeine Tungushbaeva, senior lecturers Dina Kulzhanova and Sholpan Shynybekova.
