A.L. Zhovtis - teacher, scholar, translator

On April 12, 2023 an interesting meeting was held at the Department of Russian language and literature of the Institute of Philology with the participation of colleagues and students of Kazakh scholar-philologist, Doctor of Philological Sciences, Professor Alexander Lazarevich Zhovtis. The event was dedicated to his 100th anniversary.

Many of his disciples are continuing their teacher`s work: they became doctors and candidates of sciences in philology, teachers and journalists. Among the participants of the meeting held in a mixed format (in the classroom and online) were the first pupils of the famous scientist, E.Tokareva and L.Belskaya, who remember Alexander Lazarevich from the very beginning of his scholarly career, from the late 40s of the twentieth century.

Several generations of Kazakh scientists and teachers shared their memories of their teacher. A.Zhovtis played an important role in the fate and scientific path of each of them.

The speeches of the participants formed a multifaceted portrait of this outstanding scholar, talented translator of poetry, teacher, and public figure. Civic courage and crystal honesty, ability to selflessly help and support in difficult times, devotion to the cause and optimism - these and many other personal qualities of the Teacher were recalled that day. The intimate atmosphere of the meeting left no one indifferent.
