OECD EXPERT CLEA FERNANDEZ DELIVERED A LECTURE AT ABAI UNIVERSITY

Today, at the Abai Kazakh National Pedagogical University, a lecture was held by Dr. Clea Fernandez, PhD in Educational Psychology, an expert from one of the most authoritative international organizations — the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), and an independent consultant. She is known as the author of innovative professional development programs for teachers and administrative staff, as well as the co-author, together with Japanese scholar Makoto Yoshida, of the scientific work “Lesson Study: A Japanese Approach to Improving Mathematics Teaching and Learning.”

The lecture focused on the topic *“Unpacking the Lesson Study Methodology for Effective Implementation in School Practice.”* The purpose of the event was to introduce teachers and students to the Lesson Study method as an effective tool for professional development and improving pedagogical practice.

During the session, the speaker provided a detailed explanation of the Lesson Study methodology for mentor-researchers, supervisors of diploma projects, and students who chose the Lesson Study format for their thesis work. The training was conducted in a workshop format and included video analysis, educational materials, and practical tasks.

Participants asked questions about the origins and development of the method in Japan, as well as its implementation in the United States and other countries.

According to the lecturer, by the end of the session, participants had the opportunity to develop skills in jointly planning a research lesson, analyzing learning and teaching processes, and effectively applying the Lesson Study approach in the context of a specific school.

It should be noted that the book “Lesson Study: A Japanese Approach to Improving Mathematics Teaching and Learning” is dedicated to one of the most effective professional development methods in Japanese education — Lesson Study (the method of collaborative lesson research). The authors present Lesson Study as a universal model that can be adapted to the pedagogical practices of different countries. This approach aims to foster teachers’ professional growth, improve the quality of education, and deepen students’ subject knowledge.
