The history of the institute (faculty) begins with the first days of the existence of Abai KazNPU, that is, since 1928. The first departments (botany, chemistry and zoology) were opened at the Institute. In 1933, it became the first among other universities in the country to admit the first students in the specialty of geography. In 1936, the department was transformed into an independent faculty. In 1955/1956, both faculties merged into the Faculty of Natural Geography. In 2014, in accordance with the Bologna Declaration, it was transformed into the Institute of Natural Science and Geography with the aim of joining the leading innovative universities.

The Institute was graduated by well-known figures of science and education in the country and the world, including academicians and corresponding members of the Academy: A.S.Beisenova, A.I.Sembayev, I.V.Seversky, B.A.Birimzhanov, L.K.Klyshov, A.B.Bekenov, R.E.Eleshov, E.A.Mambetkaziev, M.K.Kukenov and others.
