Knowledge of foreign languages is the key to successful professional activity
On April 8, 2024, 1st year students of the specialty "Translation Studies" had an excursion to the library of the Goethe Institute in Almaty. The reading room staff introduced our students to excellent opportunities and conditions for learning a foreign language. First of all, with the extensive literary and audio/video collection of the institute`s library, ranging from linguistic and encyclopedic dictionaries, to thematic and universal encyclopedias. Modern multimedia devices and large-format displays with touch screens aroused keen interest among students.
Students paid special attention to a wide selection of textbooks on levels of German language proficiency (A1-C2), educational and methodological material and German fiction in paper and electronic format, as well as a library of audiobooks for online listening.
Future translators showed great interest in information about the activities of the "Young Translators Project" at the Goethe Institute, both prose and poetry in the language pair German-Kazakh and Kazakh-German. This project demonstrates a significant increase in the interest of readers and translators of German-speaking countries in both the language and literary creativity of Kazakhstan.
At the end of the excursion, students were presented with books by participants in the literary and translation project and invited to various events, creative meetings, training courses and seminars with the participation of native speakers.
