UI GreenMetric overall Rankings 2022 evaluated the sustainable development strategy of KazNPU, awarding 738th place

On December 12, 2022, results of UI GreenMetric Overall Rankings 2022 were published, in which Abai KazNPU reached 738th place among 1050 universities of the world out of more than 80 countries, and 8th place among 12 Kazakh universities.

The rating, conducted by Indonesian University is distinguished by its focus on environmental and sustainable development issues.

The rating methodology is based on the analysis of six criteria; each of them includes several indicators:
1. Setting and Infrastructure (SI) (weight coefficient - 15%). Includes both specific "environmental" indicators that characterize the general attitude of the campus to the natural environment (for example, the percentage of the campus area covered with vegetation in the form of a forest, and indicators that are widely used in the main academic rankings (number of students, number of academic and administrative staff) .
2. Energy and Climate Change (EC) (21%). Includes a list of indicators, such as the use of energy efficient appliances, renewable energy sources, total electricity consumption per year (kWh), etc.
3. Waste (WS) (18%). This includes indicators that assess the university`s recycling capabilities (university waste management program, toxic waste management, policies to reduce the use of paper and plastic on campus, etc.).
4. Water (WR) (10%). Program for water conservation, recycling and use of tap water and sewerage.
5. Transportation (TR) (18%). Indicators that determine the number of vehicles owned by the university, the number of cars entering the territory of the university daily, the number of bicycles that are daily on the territory of the university, transport policy aimed at limiting or reducing parking space on campus, etc.
6. Education and research (ED) (18%). These included indicators evaluating the activities of universities in the creation and dissemination of environmental knowledge (training courses on environmental issues, research funds aimed at studying environmental issues, the number of published scientific papers on environmental issues, etc.).

Participation in the UI GreenMetric Ranking confirms the University`s commitment to the sustainable development strategy, which is a global trend. Compared to last year, the university lost its positions by 79 points. This is due, first, to the fact that for full participation it is necessary to have at least two start-ups in the field of sustainable development. The absence of start-up projects in the field of SDGs affected the final position in the ranking. For the effective promotion of the university in the international ranking, the involvement and corporate support of all educational institutions, especially the natural sciences, is necessary in the fragmentation and collection of information.
