Public Lecture «Biodiversity Conservation: Birds»

On December 6, 2022, at the Institute of Natural Science and Geography of Abai KazNPU, an open lecture «Biodiversity conservation: birds» was held. Director of Science of Association for the Conservation of Biodiversity of Kazakhstan (ACBK) Sergey Sklyarenko spoke about the threats to birds in the world and in Kazakhstan, how birds and their migrations are studied, and about the Important Bird Areas (IBA - Important Bird Areas). Students showed great interest in modern methods of studying birds, especially with the use of advanced technologies. The students even tried themselves as bird census specialists and tried to count the birds from photographs; It wasn`t easy, but it was exciting.

The Students for Nature project, which has been implemented by ACBK since this year at several universities in Almaty, Astana, Uralsk and Atyrau, was also presented. The project includes lectures on the conservation of Kazakhstan`s biodiversity, training on bird watching and avifauna accounting, and organization of special field trips to collect scientific data on birds and their habitats.

Obtaining skills in bird watching and bird counts in cities and on water bodies will be especially useful for future teachers of natural sciences. In the future, working in schools, teachers will be able to teach this to students, thereby introducing them to respect for nature.
Dear students, if you were not at the lecture, but you are interested in the topics of biodiversity conservation, birds and nature protection, then you can write to acbk@acbk.kz that you want to take part in the project (subject line: «Students for Nature»). Only students of Abai KazNPU are allowed to participate. Faculty and course of study are of no significance.
