The primary purpose of this new department is to cultivate highly skilled educators, professionals, and scholars specializing in Kazakhstan`s ancient and medieval history. The department is committed to researching and systematizing these historical periods, integrating them into the educational curriculum, and preserving this knowledge for future generations.


The department is headed by Candidate of Historical Sciences and Professor N. A. Atygaev. Notable faculty members include Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Kazakhstan, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor H.M. Abzhanov; Doctor of Historical Sciences, Associate Professors B.O. Zhanguttin, S.O. Smagulova, J.A. Kudaibergenova, and K.S. Alimgazinov; and Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Professor B.K. Abdugulova. The team also comprises a range of accomplished scholars and instructors holding advanced degrees and qualifications.


The department offers undergraduate and graduate programs designed to train future educators and researchers in ancient and medieval history. Key programs include: 7M01611 - Ancient and Medieval Kazakhstan, 6B01609 - Digital History and Archaeology.
These programs benefit from practical training at the Digital History Laboratory. Additionally, the department is developing new educational offerings to further support its mission.


The department`s faculty conducts extensive research in areas such as the archaeology and ethnology of Kazakhstan, ancient and medieval manuscripts, the origins of early Kazakh states, the history and culture of the Turkic period, the Kipchak Khanate, the Great Mongol Empire, the Ulus of Jochi (Golden Horde), and the Kazakh Khanate. Faculty members actively publish their work in high-impact journals, including Scopus and Web of Science-indexed publications, as well as journals recommended by the KKSON RK. They also lead and participate in grant-funded research projects.


The department maintains strong ties with renowned institutions abroad, including the University of Toronto (Canada), National Institute of Technology, Oyama College (Japan), the University of Vienna (Austria), Ankara University (Turkey), Marmara University (Turkey), and the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Faculty members also collaborate with specialists from institutions in Belarus, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and others.


Throughout the academic year, faculty present research findings at international conferences and symposia in locations such as Turkey, Russia, Azerbaijan, and Uzbekistan. These activities foster KazNPU`s reputation within the global academic community and enhance Kazakhstan`s visibility in the field of historical scholarship.


The department collaborates with prominent Kazakhstani research institutions and universities, including the A. Margulan Archaeology Institute, Sh. Ualikhanov History and Ethnology Institute, Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, and Nazarbayev University. These partnerships support the department`s mission to deepen understanding of Kazakhstan`s ancient and medieval heritage.


The department hosted an international conference, "Ulus Jochi: History, Legacy, and Contribution," on May 22, 2024, in celebration of the 800th anniversary of the Ulus Jochi state. Scholars from Canada, Turkey, the United States, Japan, and other countries attended, and the event garnered significant media coverage.


As part of the "Decade of Science - 2024," the department held a roundtable on "Perspectives of Turkish Historians on Researching the History of the Golden Horde" and a seminar on "Approaches to Teaching the History of Ancient and Medieval Kazakhstan".


Additionally, on March 15, Turkish historian Professor Abdullah Gundogdu of Ankara University delivered a lecture on the history of the Ulus of Jochi, enriching students` understanding of this period. From October 16-24, 2024, renowned numismatist Dr. Petrov will conduct lectures in collaboration with the A. Kh. Margulan Institute of Archaeology to stimulate interest in numismatics among students, especially in ancient and medieval Kazakhstan.

 

In April 2024, the department co-organized the "AKYNZHANOV Readings - 2024" conference, bringing together young researchers from across Kazakhstan to discuss current issues in archaeological research.
