History of the Department of Foreign Languages

The Department of «Foreign Languages» was founded at our university in 1928. Over the years, it was led by V.M. Shvartsman, M.R. Dzhumabayeva, K.M. Mamytbekov.

The Department of Foreign Languages was established in 2018 by merging the departments of «Professional Foreign Language Communication» and «Professionally Oriented Languages». Today it is one of the leading departments of the Institute of Philology and Multilingual Education. The department of «Professional foreign language communication» was headed by Doctor of Philosophy, Professor T. T. Ayapova and Candidate of Philology, senior teacher B.E. Bukabayeva.

Currently, the staff of the department consists of 43 teachers (21 work part-time). Among them are two professors, doctors of philological sciences, three associate professors, eight candidates of sciences, two PhDs, 8 masters, senior teachers, 23 masters, teachers.

The priority directions of the department are the preparation of highly qualified teachers of two foreign languages, possessing intercultural foreign language communicative competence, capable of creatively and professionally solving pedagogical problems in accordance with the requirements of the modern paradigm of foreign language education.

The department implements educational programs: 6В01703 - Foreign language: two foreign languages, 7М01703 - Teacher training in languages and literature (Foreign language: two foreign languages). Since 2020, the head of the department is Seidaliyeva Guldana Omarovna, PhD, senior teacher.

Professors Zh.A. Abuov and T.T. Ayapova are members of the National Commission for the translation of the Kazakh alphabet into Latin script. Zh.A. Abuov - Doctor of Philology, Professor, Academician of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences, Honorary Professor of the University of California (USA), awarded the orders «Kurmet» (2005), «Cultural Worker» (2005), «For Merit in the Development of Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan» (2005), «Honorary Worker of Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan» (2005), medals «20 years of Independence of the Republic of Kazakhstan» (2011), «Korkyt ata Gold Medal» (2017). T.T. Ayapova is a well-known scientist both in Kazakhstan and abroad, the author of a number of monographs, numerous innovative textbooks and teaching aids for schools and universities of the Republic of Kazakhstan. T.T. Ayapova takes an active part in international conferences and online conferences, and also took part in a number of conferences like Newcastle University (UK 2007), Urbana-Champaign, Illinois (USA 2008).

The main scientific directions of the Department of Foreign Languages:
- Theory and practice of modern foreign language education;
- Cognitive lingua-cultural methodology of foreign language education;
- Interactive technologies of foreign language education;
- Digital technologies of foreign language education;
- Competence model of a foreign language teacher.

In 2020, specialty «6В01703- Foreign language: two foreign languages» got 1st place (IAAR).

The activities of the Department of Foreign Languages are organized in accordance with the stated mission, goals and objectives of the development strategy of the Abai KazNPU University and is aimed at their implementation.
