In 1969, the Art and Graphic Faculty of the Kazakh Pedagogical Institute named after Abai was a creative center for professional artists and teachers of the specialty «Fine Art and drawing».

The Department of Art Education is one of the oldest departments of the Institute of Arts, Culture and Sports (formerly the Art and Graphic Faculty). In connection with the opening of new specialties from the 2013/2014 academic year, the Art and Graphic Faculty was transformed into the Institute of Art, Culture and Sports.

Under different names, the department has been functioning and actively developing almost since 1969. The main purpose of the department is to train highly professional teachers for the system of school and additional education in the field of fine arts, artistic work, graphics and design. In addition, the department trains specialists in the field of art: painting and graphics.

In addition to mastering the knowledge necessary for professional activity, the Department of Art Education aims to improve students` knowledge, use information resources, be ready for social interaction, as well as develop basic skills such as communicative competence.

The Department of Art Education continues to work in the field of teacher training for universities, colleges, lyceums, special art schools and secondary schools in the field of art.
